A comprehensive new assessment by United Nations agencies warns that accelerating climate change, including erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and advancing desertification, is placing the food security of approximately 120 million people across the Sahel region at serious and growing risk.
The report, compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme, projects that without immediate and sustained intervention, food insecurity in the Sahel could worsen dramatically over the coming decade.
